Palmer and Beckett to train for Abdullah

KHALID ABDULLAH has added Hugo Palmer and Ralph Beckett to his roster of trainers for 2016 with the pair set to train for the leading owner for the first time.

Palmer described the news as a “great thrill” and expects to receive his first batch of yearlings from Abdullah’s Juddmonte operation in the coming days.

Palmer and Beckett had stellar seasons in 2015, with Palmer enjoying his first Classic success in the Darley Irish Oaks with Covert Love, who went onto further Group 1 glory in the Prix de l’Opera at Longchamp in October.

Beckett, two-time winner of the Oaks, had a successful climax to the campaign when winning the Ladbrokes St Leger with Simple Verse who also struck again at Group 1 level in the Qipco Champions Filly & Mare Stakes at Ascot in October.

Palmer said: “It’s a great thrill for everyone at Kremlin Cottage to receive the backing of Juddmonte. I don’t know about numbers yet but believe they will arrive in the coming days.”

After the retirement of Lady Cecil and recent death of Pat Eddery, Abdullah has moved to widen his roster in an important year with the first offspring of Frankel set to hit the track.

Abdullah’s domestic trainers also include John Gosden, Sir Michael Stoute, Roger Charlton, Charlie Hills and Amanda Perrett.
