SMAD PLACE, who demolished his rivals in last month’s Hennessy Gold Cup, is set to take his chance in Saturday’s William Hill King George VI Chase at Kempton.
Trainer Alan King was initially not keen on running the impressive Hennessy hero in Kempton’s Christmas cracker, but gave the go-ahead on Monday morning after the grey pleased in a schooling session under Wayne Hutchinson.
“Provided everything goes according to plan through the week he’ll take his chance.”King said: “I’m going to confirm Smad Place. Wayne schooled him over six fences this morning and was delighted with him.
Smad Place, a general 14-1 chance for the King George, joins an elite Kempton cast that includes leading Timico Cheltenham Gold Cup contenders Don Cossack and Vautour, the revitalised Cue Card and Silviniaco Conti, who is on a hat-trick in the track’s most famous race.
