Elliott: Vautour the one to beat in King George

GORDON ELLIOTT views Vautour as the biggest danger to Don Cossack in the William Hill King George VI Chase next week if last season’s wide-margin JLT Novices’ Chase winner stays the longer trip.

The sponsors make Don Cossack their 5-2 favourite, with Vautour next best at 3-1, and Elliott said he is a big admirer of his main market rival.

“Obviously Coneygree would be a big danger if he was supplemented and Cue Card is having one hell of a season but Vautour is probably the one we all have to beat if he stays.””I’m a massive fan of Vautour and, if he stays, he’s definitely the one to beat,” the trainer said.

Elliott issued an upbeat bulletin on Don Cossack, stressing that everything has gone according to script since he won the JNWine.com Champion Chase at Down Royal on the last day of October and that he will have his last piece of work ahead of the trip to Kempton this week.

All good with Don

“I couldn’t be happier with him and the King George is definitely the plan. He’ll work later this week and that will be it.

“He’s been ticking over nicely since Down Royal,” Elliott said.

“The King George is a great race and it’s great to be involved in it, but it would be even better to win it. We’ll keep it simple with regard to tactics and set off in the first three or four.

“He’s won around a tight track like Aintree so I’m not concerned about the track. I just hope they go a good clip, which I’m sure they will.”

Elliott also revealed he is likely to have a companion for Don Cossack next week, although he is not certain who it will be or where it will run.

“I’m trying to find something to keep him company on the way over. I might even have to run one at Wolverhampton but I’d like something to head over with him, that’s for sure,” Elliott added.
